The borough
Windsor and Eton at one end, Maidenhead at the other, with Ascot, Sunninghill, Sunningdale, Datchet, Old Windsor, Cookham, Bray and Holyport in between. Around 145,000 people live here. Two things shape local life more than anything else: the visitor economy around the castle and the Great Park, which affects parking, licensing and the town centre in ways residents feel year round, and the amount of protected land, which makes almost any development proposal contentious.
One council for everything
The Royal Borough has been a unitary authority since 1998, when Berkshire County Council was abolished, so planning, waste, highways, licensing, council tax, schools and social care all sit with the same body. The reorganisation happening elsewhere in England does not affect it: of the Berkshire unitaries only West Berkshire is involved, so this council is expected to continue as it is.
What we work from
The council’s planning register and committee papers, budget and audit reports, licensing notices, police.uk crime data, HM Land Registry sold prices, Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, Environment Agency flood warnings for the Thames, and company filings in The Gazette. Flooding along the river is a standing local subject and we report the official warnings rather than the version going round.
